2010 Census to begin--Avoid Scams

January 15, 2010

As the 2010 US Census begins, the Better Business Bureau advises people to cooperate, but be cautious.  Eventually more than 140,000 US Census Workers will count every person in the US.  They will also gather information, including name, age, gender and race.

But how do you tell the difference between a US Census Worker and a con-artist?  The BBB offers the following advice:
A US Census Worker has a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice.  You may ask to see his/her id before asking any questions.
Current US Census Workers are only verifying address information.  NO Social Security number, Credit Card numbers or Banking Information will be requested.

The only information you need to provide is the number of people who reside at your address.  They may ask for salary range information, which you may provide, if you wish.

The US Census Bureau may contact you by telephone, mail or in person, but NOT by email.

If you are interested in further information, please contact your local Better Business Bureau.
